Raha Nobowati

Raha Nobowati studied philosophy and gender studies at Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Oregon, where they earned a PhD in philosophy and a graduate certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. They have taught as an instructor of record in both the philosophy and WGSS departments at the University of Oregon. At Western, they offer introductory classes on Feminist Theory and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, as well as upper-level classes (Transnational Queer Feminisms in the fall of 2025).

Dr. Nobowati’s research spans social and political philosophy (with a focus on Foucault), feminist philosophy, queer theory, and postcolonial theory. Their current work examines decolonial feminist critique as a methodology for studying transnational formations of gender and sexuality in the Global South, particularly in the context of Iran and the Woman Life Freedom movement against compulsory hijab.
