John Limbert spent 34 years in the United States Department of State, serving primarily in the Middle East and in Muslim-majority countries in Africa. He was among the last American diplomats posted to the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and was taken hostage there following the revolution, enduring 14 months in captivity.
After retiring from the State Department in 2006, he joined the U.S. Naval Academy as a professor of Middle Eastern studies. His publications include Iran at War with History, Shiraz in the Age of Hafez, and Negotiating with Iran: Wrestling with the Ghosts of History, as well as a novel titled Believers: Love and Death in Tehran, co-authored with Mark Grossman.
