Chapter 6 from the Book

“Destructive Coordination, Anfal and Islamic Political Capitalism: A New Reading of Contemporary Iran”

The focus of this chapter, “Destructive Coordination: Anfal and Islamic Political Capitalism,” is to explain how the Anfal system advanced and came to dominate Iran’s economy. This is explored through an examination of the formation and growth of Velayat-based charitable institutions and the parallel Islamic banking system during different phases of the history of the Islamic Republic under the doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih. The chapter analyzes the preparation for the “Islamic Economic Revolution,” which was completed with Ayatollah Khamenei’s privatization decree in 2006, during the first two phases of Anfal (1979–2006).
