Profiles

This lesson is a continuation of the previous lesson titled “Theories of Democracy”. It is not necessary to have passed the previous lesson, but it is recommended to watch the videos of that lesson which are available to everyone.

In the previous lesson, we became acquainted with some theories of new democracy. We discussed views in the form of the liberal mainstream, and we also mentioned critical views. The critical views are those who consider the democracy established in countries with liberal democratic systems to be mostly formal and lacking in terms of public participation in decisions. Criticism of democracies has continued for as long as their lives. Criticism has been made both from the angle of authoritarianism and defense of the rule of the monarchy and nobility, and from the angle of radical democracy.

In this lesson, we discuss the views of classical figures who have influenced current ideas about democratization of democracy and radical democracy. The issues they raised are also useful for those who work on the issue of transition to democracy.
