Lecture abstract
Titled “The Specter of Mahsa Amini,” Asef Bayat’s lecture examines the widespread protests sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death as a broader struggle for dignity and liberation in Iran. Led largely by women, the movement goes beyond hijab laws to challenge systemic repression and demand a new way of life. Bayat argues that the movement reveals the emergence of a new political subjectivity and the potential for transformative change, even if the final outcome remains uncertain.

Prince Dr Sabbar Farman-Farmaian Research Project (SFFRP) is an academic non-profit organization founded to promote and support research and scholarship on Iranian history (social, political, and economic), culture, and civilization.
The initial funding for the project was provided by the generous contribution of the Farmanfarmaian family and the International Institute for Social History ( IISH ) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
One of the main goals of the SFFRP, as stated in its executive guidelines, is to hold the “Annual Farmanfarmaian Lectures” by prominent scholars and experts in the field of Iranian studies. These lectures are held at the invitation of the SFFRP Executive Board and help to strengthen knowledge and research in this field.
The fourth annual Farmanfarmaian Lecture was presented on May 9, 2023, by Professor Asef Bayat in Amsterdam, in collaboration with SFFRP and IISH.
