The contemporary world is experiencing a profound transformation driven by advancements in digital technologies, fundamentally altering the ways in which we live, produce, govern, and “are”. Iran, its populace, and the broader Iranian diaspora are both influenced by and contributors to this digital metamorphosis.
Notably, the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), alongside other emergent technologies, is poised to significantly impact lives, relations, environments, and societal structures. This talk examines the prospective consequences of digital transformation within the purview of Iranian Studies. By positioning Iranian Studies not merely as an isolated academic field but as an active participant in societal dynamics, we will explore how the discipline itself is both co-shaped by and capable of co-shaping digital transformation.
The dual focus will be on the implications of AI and digital transformation on research within Iranian Studies and the reciprocal influence of the field on transformations. The aim of this discussion is to provoke critical dialogues within the Iranian Studies community regarding the discipline’s “future readiness.”
This encompasses an evaluation of current research topics, methodologies, and the field’s interconnectedness with technological and societal changes. To address this, there is a pressing need to reassess the existing state of the discipline and its potential contributions to the co-construction of future societies, approached from a pluralist perspective. The talk will also call for new collaborative research initiatives and provide guidance to inspire the audience in shaping their future research agendas.
